Our iBook died on the 26th, not long after WD broke her arm (which continues to do better and better; she got the splint off on the 3rd). We rented a fancy MacBook from
darcythemousy, who couldn't have been nicer or easier to deal with. Ours came back from California and was almost ready at the shop when they realized something had been screwed up and it was only able to access 1/8 of its memory. Argh! Back to California it went, and
darcythemousy needed hers back. So we rented a little 12" G4 PowerBook from the shop where ours is being worked on, and they poured much of our backed-up data onto it (good thing we'd gotten the data backed up; for no apparent reason, Apple put a new hard drive in our iBook while they were replacing the parts they were supposed to replace).
But that's all by way of introduction; what I really wanted to say was how compelling I found it, now that I had access once again to files that I never take the time to go back through on an ordinary day, to reread things like my journal from Reed years and grad school years. That data was backed up on CD, but having come close to "losing" it made me really appreciate its value to myself. Especially some of the UO stuff that I had just plain forgotten -- people I hung out with at Max's, how much time I spent with Daniel Woo in 1999 (just reduced to a vague smear of affection in my mind a few weeks ago when I learned that he had died). And more... I'm really glad I stayed up late reading that stuff.
